The Maze Coral, often a member of the Platygyra genus, is a classic Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral known for its uniquely structured skeleton. Its common name comes from the winding, labyrinthine walls of its corallites, which create an intricate pattern reminiscent of a maze. This brain-like appearance provides a distinct texture and visual appeal that stands out among other corals in a reef aquarium. It is a hardy coral that makes a great choice for hobbyists who have some experience with LPS care.

The appearance of a Maze Coral is defined by its meandering ridges and valleys. The fleshy polyps cover this structure, and coloration can be quite variable. Most commonly, these corals exhibit shades of green, brown, or cream. The valleys and ridges are often contrasting colors, which highlights the signature maze pattern. At night, its polyps may extend small tentacles for feeding, a fascinating behavior to observe.

For proper care, Maze Corals require moderate lighting, ideally in the 100 to 250 PAR range. They should be placed on the sandbed or on lower to middle rockwork where they can receive this indirect light. Water flow should be moderate and indirect; enough to keep detritus from settling within its deep grooves, but not so strong that it prevents the polyps from expanding. While photosynthetic, they benefit from occasional target feeding with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS coral foods. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium from 1250-1350 ppm. These corals can be aggressive and may extend sweeper tentacles at night, so provide at least 3-6 inches of space between them and neighboring corals. As with any new coral, a slow drip acclimation is recommended to help it adjust to your tank’s conditions.

The interesting texture and structure of the Maze Coral make it a compelling addition to a mixed reef tank. Its moderate care needs and the unique visual element it provides ensure it will be a rewarding species for many reef keepers to grow.
